Sunday Assembly with Ryan Bell
Taking Wonder To The Streets
Our ability to experience wonder is seriously limited when we are being crushed under of a burden of poverty and injustice. New research links poverty and mental illness as well as limited cognitive abilities. In pursuit of helping people experience wonder, secular communities should turn their attention to economic injustice. Returning speaker Ryan Bell will share stories of congregational community organizing from his days as a pastor and explain why humanist organizations must fight for economic justice, not just social justice. As the German theologian of the resistance during WWII, Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “We are not to simply bandage the wounds of victims beneath the wheels of injustice, we are to drive a spoke into the wheel itself.”
