Sunday Assembly with with Gabi Laske

NEW location San Diego Indoor Sports Club

3030 Front St Bankers Hill off 1st, San Diego, CA

Scanning the Plume

Dr. Gabi Laske, Professor in Residence at the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, will tell us about the interdisciplinary Plume-Lithosphere Undersea Mantle Experiment (PLUME) study of the shape and origin of the mantle plume beneath the Hawaiian hotspot that is responsible for spectacular volcanism on the surface. The centerpiece of this 5-year project is an unprecedented long-term deployment of broad-band OBS (ocean bottom seismometers) to record teleseismic earthquakes, technology that illuminates the deep interior beneath Hawaii using tomographic techniques, much like CAT scans of the human body.
