How Darwin Got His Ideas

Don't miss our special Earth Fair Day Assembly with Dr. Steve Baird and The Galapagos Mountain Boys, and guest MC, Ian Harris, “Critical & Thinking”  skeptic and comedian! After the assembly, join us for a Sunday stroll over to the San Diego Earth Fair in Balboa Park!

Dr. Steve Baird will speak about how Darwin got his ideas. His band, The Galapagos Mountain Boys are known for such old-time favorites as, “Ain’t Gonna Be No Judgment Day” and “Halleluja! Evolution!” Dr. Baird is a retired professor of Pathology at UCSD, and originator of Scientific Gospel – the only musical genre that can raise your science grades in school!

About the Speaker

Dr. Stephen Baird was raised in the Oklahoma "Bible Belt" on country and gospel music. After attending Stanford University, he underwent a conversion to rationalism. Almost immediately he noticed the dearth of scientific gospel music. While teaching medical school, Dr. Baird acquired the habit of reducing medical and other scientific concepts to popular song form, shamelessly perverting the original intent of Christmas carols by using them for melodies. He soon exhausted Christmas carols as sources of melodies, and moved on to gospel and well-known hymns. This led to a relatively large body of material on such arcane subjects as cytokynes, interleukins, gene function, chromosome structure, cellular immunology, the Big Bang, and black holes. Since his retirement in 2007, he continues to expand the Scientific Gospel liturgy.

About the MC

Originally a San Francisco Bay Area comic, Ian Harris is a top headliner from the L.A. comedy scene, writer, and director. You'll recognize this irreverent skeptic from his shows, "Live from the Apocalypse," "The Evolution of Comedy," and his recent Comedy Central special, "Ian Harris: Critical & Thinking,"
