Join us in celebrating Day of the Dead, a festival in which we honor our deceased loved ones. During our secular version of Día de los Muertos, we honor our departed loved ones without the notion of a religious afterlife; instead, we celebrate life before death. We remind ourselves that instead of dwelling in the sadness of death, we can be grateful for what our loved ones left behind for us to pass on. Join us for food, drinks, a piñata for the kids, face painting, and a raffle! $5/adult, $3/kids (12 and under).

Traditions that we will celebrate include:
- Face painting for kids – and adults! Traditionally, you paint half of your face as a skeleton.
- Piñata for kids.
- Loteria (traditional game).
- Wearing jewelry from the deceased person. For example, your grandmother's rings and necklace.
- Feel free to participate by bringing in a framed photo of a deceased loved one. We will have a decorated table at the event honoring loved ones. If anyone would like to talk for 2 minutes about the person they are honoring, please contact Victoria at [email protected]. Please contact Victoria if you’d like to volunteer at this event.

How the Secular Day of the Dead Began
Victoria de la Torre and Margaret Downey were discussing their mutual love for Day of the Dead and the importance that it can hold for atheists, and they immediately knew that they had to celebrate it with the rest of the secular community, emphasizing the importance of cherishing life before death, and the notion that we atheists, humanists, and nones don’t have to relinquish our beloved traditions. The various San Diego secular organizations have come together to create a respectful, fun, and meaningful event for us celebrate now and in the future.
