Prisoners' Rights. Why Should You Care?

humanrights.jpg

An attorney specializing in prisoners' civil rights litigation, Stacy Scheff will talk about what happens after “lock 'em up and throw away the key,” and why you should care. Prisoners are the easiest, and most justifiable population to neglect, and even actively discriminate against, having committed crimes, sometimes violent ones. This talk will ber her closing argument to you, the jurors. She will show that what happens inside prisons affects all of us, both inside and out, criminal and law-abiding citizen alike, and that it is in our best interests to demand humane treatment for all prisoners, regardless of their crimes.

About our speaker: Stacy Scheff is a native Tucsonan who grew up surrounded by civil rights activists and lawyers. While with the London-Pacific Theater Company from 1995 – 2002, Stacy produced original political theater in Santa Fe, New Mexico, San Francisco, and Sydney, Australia. While in Sydney, Stacy was employed as a campaign coordinator by Justice Action, a prisoners' rights non-profit. Returning home, Stacy obtained her law degree from the University of Arizona law school. Since then, she's practiced a wide variety of law, including civil rights, personal injury, criminal defense, civil rights restoration, elections law, and civil forfeiture/seizure. Now in her own law firm, she specializes in prisoners' civil rights litigation, inspired by the settlement of a state-wide class action case that set the standards of care for medical treatment for prisoners.
