The Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project

The Nathan Harrison Historical Archaeology Project – a 20-year endeavor that has uncovered nearly 60,000 artifacts, more than 30 photographs, and over 130 historical documents – reveals the life of Nathan Harrison, the first African American Homesteader in San Diego County. Harrison, a formerly enslaved man from Kentucky, was moved to California in the mid-1800s through forced migration. After his enslaver died, as a free man he gradually moved south, settling on the western slope of Palomar Mountain. Jamie Bastide, Collections Management Coordinator at San Diego State University, will share how archaeology and archival research uncovered Harrison’s deep connection to local Native American groups, his interactions with tourists that visited his homestead for water, and his close association with friends and neighbors in the area. Through a careful balance of self-deprecating humor, tourism, and reciprocity, Harrison successfully navigated a time of violence and racism in San Diego's history to become a legend in both his time and ours.

You may (but don't have to) RSVP on Meetup.

Some of the best community time is staying after the assembly for coffee, snacks and to hang out with other assemblers, so please do.

In the corner of the box with your face in it, you can choose to hide yourself from your view, so you won't find looking at yourself so distracting. Also, it'll make more space on your screen to see others.
