Sunday Assembly: Gender, Sexual Diversity, and You

with Margo Sloan, HIV Prevention Technical Advisor at U.S. Department of Defense HIV/AIDS Prevention Program

In the past few years, the United States has seen remarkable gains in acceptance of gender and sexual diversity with the legalization of gay marriage, removal of the "don't ask, don't tell" military policy, and inclusion of transgender people in popular media. Margo Sloan, a technical advisor to a U.S. Department of Defense program implementing global foreign aid programs focused on HIV, gender, and sexual health, will help us explore why it's important to learn about gender and sexual minorities; describe a common language we can use to speak about different aspects of sexual identity; and help us discover how we can support gender and sexual diversity within our communities.

Margo Sloan has been working in the field of HIV for 16 years with a focus on sexual and reproductive health in the global context. She has a Master of Public Health in Sociomedical Sciences in Sexuality and Health from Columbia University and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Public Health from the University of South Florida. Ms. Sloan works as a technical advisor for a U.S. Department of Defense program that implements HIV prevention, care, and treatment programs through U.S. Embassies abroad, with a special focus on sub-Saharan Africa. She also represents the Department of Defense on technical working groups for the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator, a presidential appointee, working to create an AIDS-free generation.
